I am still pinching myself when I think about the Equinox. Is it true… is it really that good?! To be honest the only time I believe it ….is when I am surfing it. I have been surfing and competing for over thirty years (too long!) and this boat has made surfing so exciting and so easy I feel like it has taken ten years off my surfing age!
Why is it so good? Not only does it look good, it looks right, you instantly want to try it when you see it… whatever Ride Kayaks do to make this boat, it makes it rigid, strong and light which all helps in the performance but it is the shape that is the critical factor.
Its smooth graceful lines are pleasing to the eye, the low volume in the nose and tail and a soft gradual rocker makes this boat perform better than any IC boat that I have ever surfed, by a quantum. The greater volume around the cockpit makes it comfortable. I am six foot two and not exactly a feather weight but it fits and floats me without a problem.
It is fast, hard to believe how fast but above all it is very manoeuvrable, it can carve at the top of a wave…. around say a football or if you wish let the rail go you can slash as much as you want. It will allow smooth tight curving bottom turns without losing the back end (which I can’t understand given how loose the boat is). It is without doubt the easiest boat to turn, even easier than an HP boat!?? And the most important bit is still to come….. stick it on a steep shoulder in the slot, set the rail and it will tuck in and surf and surf and surf. It will happily hold its position and run along the face of the wave without any twitching, turning up the wave or sliding out. Brilliant.
I have surfed this boat from Brims Ness in Scotland to Sidmouth on the South Coast (not one wave!) and in many different surfing conditions. I would recommend this boat to someone starting out and to the very top performance IC paddlers in this great sport.
Such an amazing combination of speed and looseness but with control; hard to believe which is why I am still pinching myself even now….. is it really true. The only way to know is to surf it and enjoy!”
